WHY RIDE THIS ROAD?
The Golden Triangle Loop combines Chiang Rai’s mountain approaches with Mae Salong, Doi Tung, Mae Sai and the Mekong around Sop Ruak and Chiang Saen. It gives road-touring riders a varied day of bends, border-country scenery and practical places to pause without requiring a long expedition. A competent rider can complete the main loop in one day, while a two-day plan allows more time at the mountain and river stops. Fog, rain and busy border-town traffic are the main reasons to keep the schedule flexible.

WHAT RIDERS SHOULD KNOW
Risk and fatigue
Fog, rain, steep mountain approaches and busy border-town traffic can slow the day. Border roads are not border-crossing advice.
Fuel planning
Top up before the Doi Mae Salong and Doi Tung mountain branches. Main towns have services, but do not plan around a single small rural station.
Bike and rider fit
Road, touring or adventure bike; comfortable on a CB500X / NX500 or similar. Suitable for competent touring riders, including experienced road riders and prepared two-up touring.
Seasonal guidance
Cool/dry season; check fog and rain on the mountain sections.
Lower-risk alternative
Skip Doi Mae Salong or Doi Tung in heavy rain or fog and use the lower, more direct roads. Make it two days if adding the Chiang Khong leg.
