Guide introduction
You do not necessarily need an expensive dedicated motorcycle GPS to navigate reliably.
ROAMERS has used several advanced offline and motorcycle-specific navigation applications. They can provide greater route control, but for normal road touring we repeatedly return to Google Maps because it is familiar, straightforward and easy to share with other riders.
Our approach is to plan the complete journey carefully, divide it into manageable Google Maps sections, download the riding area for offline use and provide a GPX version for riders who want an additional route reference or use another navigation device.
This is particularly practical for group rides and Fly & Ride travel, where equipment must work across different rental motorcycles without complicated installation.
No digital navigation system is foolproof. The objective is to create a simple, tested and failure-tolerant system rather than depending on one connection, file or device.

The better system is not necessarily another application. It is better preparation around a simple application riders already understand.

USING A ROAMERS ROUTE
A rider using a published ROAMERS route does not need to create or convert a GPX file.Before the ride
- Open the ROAMERS route page.
- Review the complete route and route notes.
- Save the provided Google Maps sections.
- Save important fuel, regroup and overnight locations.
- Download the complete surrounding area in Google Maps.
- Download the ROAMERS GPX only if you want an additional route reference or use a compatible device.
- Confirm that the route information is stored locally and does not require a cloud connection.
- Complete a short test ride before depending on the setup overseas.

WHY ROAMERS DEFAULTS TO GOOGLE MAPS
Google Maps is not a specialist motorcycle-navigation application, but it solves several practical problems well.

Most riders already understand how to search, start navigation, change a destination and share a location.
EASY TO SHARE
A Google Maps link can be sent through WhatsApp, Messenger, email or another group channel and opened on most modern phones.
USEFUL ACROSS MANY COUNTRIES
Google Maps is useful across many countries where its mapping and offline functions are supported. Always check destination-specific availability before travelling.
CURRENT DESTINATION INFORMATION
When online, Google Maps is particularly useful for finding accommodation, fuel, food and other businesses and checking current location information.
WORKS WITH DOWNLOADED MAPS
Google Maps supports offline driving navigation when the complete route is contained within a downloaded area.
NO ADDITIONAL HARDWARE REQUIRED
A rider may only need a secure mount and reliable power.

HOW ROAMERS PLANS THE COMPLETE JOURNEY

ROAMERS uses Google My Maps on a computer to organise the complete journey.
Where practical, each riding day and supporting category should be placed in a clearly named layer.

Divide each day into manageable Google Maps sections
Long routes should not depend on one navigation request containing every stop. Create deliberate sections such as hotel to fuel, fuel to lunch, lunch to viewpoint and viewpoint to overnight accommodation.
Important intermediate stops help hold Google Maps on the intended motorcycle road.
Before sharing a link
- Open it in standard Google Maps
- Confirm the start and finish
- Check the intended roads
- Confirm the travel direction
- Check that stops appear in the correct order
- Use the route preview to identify any obvious recalculation
This reduces—but cannot eliminate—the possibility of Google selecting a different road.
GROUP RIDE METHOD
SHARING NAVIGATION ON A GROUP RIDE
ROAMERS uses one view-only Google My Maps expedition overview, numbered Google Maps navigation links, separately shared location pins, optional GPX files and the established captain, sweep and corner-marking procedures.

If a rider becomes separated, they should still have the same route sections, regroup locations and overnight destination as the rest of the group.
PREPARE FOR LOST COVERAGE
DOWNLOAD THE COMPLETE RIDING AREA
Menu names and locations can vary between iPhone, Android and different Google Maps versions. The steps below reflect the interface when this guide was last checked.
In Google Maps on the phone:
- Open the profile or account menu.
- Select Offline maps.
- Select Select your own map.
- Expand the download area to cover the complete route.
- Include a reasonable margin around the route.
- Download the map.
- Confirm that it has completed.
- Update it again shortly before travelling if necessary.
Do not download only a very narrow corridor. Include surrounding roads so the map remains useful after a missed turn, closure, diversion, fuel change, accommodation change or emergency reroute.
Downloaded Google Maps can provide supported offline driving navigation when the complete route is covered.

Offline-map availability can vary between countries or regions. Check availability before travelling.
REAL-WORLD CHECK

Before the main trip, complete a short local test ride with mobile data and Wi-Fi disabled.

Restore normal connectivity after completing the test. This real-world test is more useful than simply checking that an offline map appears in the download list.
GPS AND MOBILE DATA
DOES PHONE GPS WORK WITHOUT MOBILE COVERAGE?
Yes. A smartphone can determine its position using GPS satellites without an active mobile-data connection.
Mobile towers and Wi-Fi can help improve or accelerate location accuracy, but they are not the only source of positioning. If the required map has been downloaded and the navigation application supports offline operation, the phone can continue showing its position and provide supported offline driving navigation.
The common misunderstanding is that no mobile signal means no GPS. They are separate systems.

ADDITIONAL ROUTE REFERENCE
GPX: USEFUL BUT OPTIONAL
A GPX file is a portable route-information file that may contain a track, a route, waypoints or a combination of these. It can be used with many dedicated GPS units and compatible phone applications.
ROAMERS provides GPX files because they give riders flexibility and preserve a separate record of the intended route.
- Google Maps does not directly provide conventional GPX-track navigation
- A GPX may contain only a visible line
- Turn-by-turn instructions are not guaranteed
- An application may recalculate or modify the route
- Different devices may interpret the same GPX differently
- Riders should inspect and test a GPX before depending on it
A GPX file should support the route plan, not create false confidence.

Download the ROAMERS GPX, transfer it to your chosen device and confirm that the displayed route follows the intended roads.
IF YOU NORMALLY USE GOOGLE MAPS
Continue using the supplied Google Maps sections. You do not need to add another application unless you want the additional backup or route comparison.
OPTIONAL: FOR RIDERS CREATING THEIR OWN ROUTESCREATING YOUR OWN GPX FROM GOOGLE MY MAPS
Google My Maps exports KML/KMZ rather than GPX directly.
On a computer:
- Open the completed map in Google My Maps.
- Open the menu in the left-hand panel.
- Select Export to KML/KMZ.
- Choose the appropriate map or layer.
- Download the file.
- Convert the KML/KMZ using a reputable GPX conversion tool or suitable route-planning software.
- Open and inspect the resulting GPX.
- Confirm that the intended roads, direction, start and finish have been preserved.
- Test the GPX in the intended application or device.
Keep the original KML/KMZ file. Use clear filenames:

Check the individual product specifications. Some displays include additional GPS or recording features, but many are primarily CarPlay or Android Auto screens.
KEEP THE SYSTEM RUNNING
POWER, WEATHER, HEAT AND VIBRATION
POWER
Use a tested bike-powered USB outlet or a suitable power bank. Carry a compatible spare cable, the correct adaptor and a backup power option where practical.
Test navigation at realistic screen brightness for at least 30 minutes. Confirm that battery level remains stable or increases.
WEATHER
Protect charging connections from rain and water ingress. Do not connect a charging cable to a wet phone or wet charging port.
HEAT
Direct sunlight, high brightness, navigation and charging generate heat. A phone may reduce performance or shut down when too hot.
VIBRATION
Extended motorcycle vibration can affect phones and camera-stabilisation systems. Use a good-quality mount with appropriate vibration isolation where possible.
REDUNDANCY
USING A SPARE PHONE
For additional redundancy, an older phone can be used as the mounted navigation device while the primary phone remains protected. A spare phone can use GPS and downloaded maps without its own SIM card, provided everything has been installed and downloaded beforehand.
Prepare both devices with offline maps, daily navigation links, important destinations, GPX files if required and adequate power. A spare phone is only useful if it has been tested and contains the information locally.
IMPORTANT DESTINATION EXCEPTION
GOOGLE MAPS SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON IN MAINLAND CHINA
The ROAMERS Google Maps recommendation applies to destinations where Google Maps and its offline-map functions are normally supported. Mainland China is an important exception.
Access to Google services can be restricted or unavailable, and a map downloaded before arrival should not be assumed to provide dependable route calculation, searching, rerouting or navigation after entering mainland China. Do not present Google Maps as the primary navigation solution for mainland China.
Recommended preparation for mainland China
- Follow the navigation and route instructions supplied by the tour operator or local support team
- Install and test a locally supported mapping application before departure
- Consider Amap Global, which currently provides an English-language version for international visitors
- Save important destinations using their Chinese names and addresses as well as English names
- Store hotel details, meeting points, emergency contacts and route information locally
- Carry the operator’s contact details separately from the navigation application
- Keep any supplied GPX as a secondary route reference only
- Confirm that every intended application works on the traveller’s actual phone before entering mainland China
Do not assume that a car-routing option is suitable or legally available to motorcycles. Motorcycle restrictions, checkpoints and permitted roads can vary by location.
Fully offline applications may provide useful map and position references, but their road information, route interpretation and imported GPX alignment must be checked before being relied upon.
Operator-supported expeditions
For guided or operator-supported travel through Yunnan and Tibet, the operator’s route, lead vehicle, permits and local instructions take priority over consumer navigation applications. Riders should not use an application-generated alternative to deviate independently from the authorised group route.
VPNs
Do not use a VPN as the primary navigation solution. Access, reliability and applicable rules can change. Travellers considering connectivity tools must check current legal requirements, official travel advice and operator guidance before departure.
RENTAL MOTORCYCLES
FLY & RIDE NAVIGATION
The same process works across many overseas rental destinations, but service availability and local navigation requirements must be checked for each country.
For Fly & Ride travel, favour a compact removable mount, suitable vibration damper, safety tether where appropriate, short charging cable, power bank, compatible adaptor, offline maps, saved Google Maps sections, locally stored destinations and optional GPX.
Do not assume the rental motorcycle will have a functioning USB outlet, the correct connector, a suitable mounting point, a navigation display or reliable mobile coverage. Prepare and test the system before leaving the hotel or rental business.

ROAMERS has used several alternative applications but continues to prefer Google Maps for most road-based group and Fly & Ride navigation because it remains the simplest system to prepare, explain and share. Riders should use the system they understand and have tested.
